Genre and Intertextuality

GENRE - a type of media product governed by implicit rules that are shared by the makers of the product and the audience for it.

Hybrid Genres and Sub-Genres

Hybrid Genres - A mix of more than one genre that is a genre of itself. E.g. Romantic comedy (Rom-com).

Sub-Genres - A genre within a genre. E.g. Slasher or Zombie (Sub of Horror).

Generic Paradigms - The Building blocks of Genre - Also knowns as conventions, are aspects of media texts that demonstrate to the audience what genre a media product is.

Iconography -The familiar signs of genre ( The things that tell you what genre a product is.

Repetoire of Elements. (Conventions)

UTOPIA (2013)

Elements of mystery and horror. It conveys this through a sense of the unknown as there is no dialogue and no explanations. The music speaks in place of the characters and is rather jolly during the unpleasant scene.

Psycological horror - The hermanutic code of the bunny, the guy suffocating the woman with gas. The name 'Utopia' suggests a paradise however the trailer makes it very apparent it is a binary opposite. The man using the gas mask to suffocate the women may be black comedy due to the British accent. The mystery genre is established through the contrapuntal music and scenery.


Intertextuality

The shaping of texts meaning through referencing or alluding to another text. Texts provide context within which other texts can be created or interpreted - reflecting the fluid boundaries or genre convention.

It involves the audience on a level that would not be possible previously. - It makes the media more comidec as the audience can see something they've seen before. It can broaden the demographic of the target audience. It allows the producer to make fun of something serious. Adult films can be made to appeal for a younger audience by making them innocent. Comedy makes it easier to deal with the social state of the world.

Advert Analysis 1 This advert was published when women played a stereotypical role in the household of a cleaning lady. It is aimed at middle class women who still do their own washing yet they have a solid income from their husbands and can afford for their clothes to look as good as new.  The way she is hugging the red box suggests it is her new love, that it is all she wants. The red box suggests that she relies on this product like she relies on a man. It is colourful and bright which suggests that the product will lead to a better, optimistic life. The advert is blunt with no hidden meanings, it suggest that she does the job - she is the washing machine. The advert has a lot of text, unlike modern adverts and the z line would miss out a lot of information. Exam practice question The representation of women in Adbusters is consistently subverted, the use of binary oppositions, as proposed by Claude Levi Strauss, is subversive as whilst the model is represented as stereotypical, she is juxtaposed with the economic migrants. The intertextuality of the migrants is subversive as we normally see them in charity adverts present a binary opposition against the wealth of the woman. This suggests she is more well off than the man which subverts patriarchal hegemony and is not common in a media product. In every case in Adbusters, the gender norms have been subverted, the hegemonic ideas of gender have been challenged. For example, the lack of anchorage in the image in Adbusters, of which forces the audience to come up with their own readings, the assumes the audience has a high level of education and may be middle class.
