What is a videogame?

In order to play a videogame you must have the correct console. Videogames tend to target a niche audience, which is less common within other forms of media such as film. Videogames are interactive and generally played by younger audiences.
The hypodermic needle model is relevant here - if you play too many violent video games you will become violent.

They have vastly more complicated narratives, every one can be different. They constantly have disequilibriums and endings. You may never get the restoration of equilibrium.

The videogame industry is a specialised industry.

The first videogame was released in 1962, called 'Space War' developed in America to be used in the military. Some of the first games were roleplaying games based on the popular board game called 'Dungeons and Dragons'. Space Invaders was a Japanese game , an arcade game that uses a dedicated cabinet in a public place - it's genre is a shooting game. Atari were also creating games such as 'centipede' - it was in full colour and uses a trackball.Nintendo jumped on the band wagon and started producing games such as 'Donkey Kong'.

In the UK micro computers were being used to play videogames at home. Bedroom coding become popular, teenage boys became programming game sin their bedrooms and selling them to big companies such as Nintendo. Genres were being made up as coders went along.

In the 1980s there was a videogame crash. E.T. cause Atari to go bankrupt. Japan had to step in and take over with the industry. 'Dragon Quest' is a roleplaying game, it started everything that led to games such as Pokemon etc. It is a Japanese interpretation of Dungeons and Dragons.

1986 - Super Mario Bros (Nintendo)

The most successful video game ever made, it is still popular to this day. It was the first video game marketed specifically towards kids. The soundtrack is very recognisable and well composed. It got very very popular, it raised the standard of videogames.

In 1991 the first SONY Playstation was released..
It had a sophisticated advertising campaign, all the games had soundtracks with popular artists, as well as launching the console at certain clubs. SONY were not making money off the console, they were making money off the games.

Videogames tend to be significantly longer than films. Indie games tend to be made by small development teams for small amounts of money. A triple A game takes thousands of people to make, for example The SIMS, Halo, COD, FIFA.

Lara Croft was created for her looks, and a female character was used so men would have a backside to look at whilst playing.

Videogames are not permanent, they only exist for a short amount of time. They have a much higher RRP than other forms of media such as films. People are turning to torrenting games because they either they cannot afford the video games or the game is no longer in print.
