Representation and Identity

Anchor Spreadable Butter:

Groups that are represented-
- The Elderly -> People with dementia -> Grandparents
- Young people -> Teenagers
- Family
- Jamaicans/Caribbean

The stereotype is that the Jamaican grandmother likes cooking so therefore would use the butter. She is also used to show diversity and be inclusive. This makes the atmosphere soft as she is friendly and laid back.

The teenage boy character is represented to have an attitude and is wearing a hoodie which fits a stereotype. His lexis is informal and his body language is presented as lid back in a mid shot.

The siblings are presented to be quite close as they are joking around together which suggest they don't have much to do. They are a close family as they are visiting their grandmother's house. The mise-en-scene of the drawing suggests they are a close family and appreciate each other.

The children have a very different accent to their grandmother of which suggests they are second generation immigrants. This appeals to many different audience which will sell the product more.

Pot Noodle -You Can Make It:

Groups that are represented-
- Young men
- People from up north
- Mixed race
- Homosexual people

The establishing shot suggests the protagonist is a messy teenage boy. His room suggests he is a working class teenage boy due to the ripped posters and tatty walls. The connotations of the North of England is that it is poorer and it is working class. He is in a low income family because there was 10 of them in a small house all eating pot noodles which are quite cheap. The clothing is informal which suggests they are a stereotypical family who are possibly on benefits. The house is run down which suggests the house has been handed down. This advert is aimed at working class as they are quite cheap but it sells to the masses. pot noodle is the stereotypical image of woking class life . The obese grandfather suggests he eats a lot of pot noodles which are bad for you which has caused him to gain weight.

The boy is training in a park not a gym which suggests he cant afford to go to the gym so he is trying to make it elsewhere. This suggests that despite what life in the north is like he is trying to make it.

The binary oppositions of the bleak north to the bright lights of vegas makes the pot noodles seem better than they are. The expectations have been flipped because it is suggested he has gone to become a boxer but he a ring girl. The skimpy clothes and the fact he is doing a stereotypical 'women's' clothes.  The sassy/camp walk makes he appear to be homosexual. However he appears to be very happy in his own skin which could suggest that Pot Noodle are optimistic of acceptance for homosexual people.

The advert implies that black people are obsessed with sex and the way he's acting goes against what the stereotypical 'gay' person is (Priveledged white).

Ways of defining ourselves:

- What you wear
- Hobbies
- Musical taste
- Where you are from
- Language/Accent
- Ethnicity
- Race
- The grades we achieved in school
