Audience Manipulation

Audience Manipulation

What do I know about audience?

The concept of audience is essential for media product existing
, a product can have a primary and secondary audience. It is the audience who decide on the success of the product - demographics is a way of classifying people based on their social class. Psychographics is a way of classifying people based on their personality.
Mass media is media that can be spread to mass audiences quickly and easily (radio and television)

What ideologies are cultivated by this Tide advert?

This makes women believe that this is what they should be doing and make men believe it should be the female in the house that does the washing. We know that it is women who do the cleaning as it only includes pictures of women doing the washing, there are no men. We are not born with this theory, we learn it through the cultivation advert. It is part of an advertising campaign, the woman is labelled/ named as the housewife. It suggests that that is her only use and that is what she was put on this earth to do. She is an archetype character as she we always see the tough man/ weak woman relationship. She is an archetypal housewife. We are also cultivated to believe that this is what women want to clean, it is something she is depressed or unhappy about, she is hugging the box and smiling.

Hegemonic messages: (Coke Advert)

The soft colours are connotative of purity and innocence, assumptions are being made about skinny women as it shows them as thin, pretty, not wearing much. It is a seasonal drink, which is drank in summer. We also associate a sense of relaxation and happiness (the gestures of the women, colours of the advert and the fact the are lying down)
