Narrative

Narrative

Narrative - The way something is told/ How the story is told and portrayed

Narrator - The one who tells the story.

Narratology is a state of balance (Tzvetan Todorov)

Establishment of Equilibrium -> Disequilibrium -> Partial restoration of equlibrium.
e.g. when a prince saves a princess he is rewarded with her love - so sometimes things go to being better than they were before.

'New' Equilibrium - Things don't always don't always go back to normal. e.g. Finding Nemo

Narrative is also moving from one state of equilibrium to another.

LIMINALITY- A period of transition.
MULTI-STRAND NARRATIVE - A narrative that follows many isolated narratives.
SINGLE-STRAND NARRATIVE- A narrative that follows a single narrative.
NON-LINEAR NARRATIVE- A Narrative that is non chronological.
LINEAR NARRATIVE- A Narrative that is chronological.

Other parts of narrative:

- Genre conventions
- Character archetypes
- Costumes
- Mise-en-scéne
- Barthe's codes
- Binary oppositions

Todorov's theory is very limiting and doesn't apply to all media texts, however it can help you to explain a concept such as narrative.

OBJECTIFICATION - The process of representing an individual as an object.
DEHUMANISATION
SEXUALISATION - the process of representing an individual for purely only sex.
