Different Perspectives

Why do producers use representation?

- To present an ideology

- To send a specific message

- To manipulate an audience

- Cultivation theory

- Entertainment value

- Financial reasons

- To tell a story (Narrative)

In what ways can media products incorporate viewpoints and ideologies?

Paragraph structure:

1. POINT (The shorter the better)

2. MEDIA LANGUAGE (Support your point)

3. ARGUMENT (Deeper analysis)

4. THEORETICAL PERSPECTIVE (Optional: used to confirm your point of view)

March 20 Case Study Toddler Hammer attack

These images have been selected in order to encode the life of the family of which this has happened to. These images show the the equilibrium before the hammer attack happened. The newspaper has constructed this narrative in order to make it more interesting to the target audience. They are trying to make a bigger story out of what has happened, the splash takes up most of the page as the story has not yet been confirmed and they don't have much information yet. The preferred response is guilt, pity and anger. The oppositional reading for this would be to find it funny or amusing.

The body language of the couple in love is a symbolic code and is slightly sinister. The body language of the child is that he is weak and vulnerable it makes the audience feel sympathetic towards the 'toddler'. It presents the audience as the killer as we are positioned as powerful over the child and therefore makes us feel guilty - this is a negotiated reading. The fact that the baby's face has not been blurred in comparison to the other because he is dead - in the eyes of the law you cease to be a person when you are dead. This is a referential code and makes the story hit reality for the audience.

Ethnicity is mentioned because he doesn't look like a stereotypical 'British' person - it suggests that they are already outcast from society and by pointing this out id puts him further from society - this is the producers ideology. The mirror doesn't mention 'Romanian' or 'Indian' as they are more likely to be criticised. - Also because this is illegal unless it is criticism.

Othering is a process of being the same and different. The couple are presented as a loving middle class family gone wrong. The dead child has been shown in order to create sympathy towards the child. The size of the image emphasises it's importance.
The referential code of the police car makes reference to a crime drama. The sleazy image of the guy being happy makes the audience feel angry that he gets that happiness when he has just allegedly killed this boy. It presents an equilibrium gone wrong, the story is in a state of disequilibrium.

BBC Radio Four: The Today Show

The headlines before the story were all about politics and the economy, of which suggests that they are more important tan this story as they affect everyone whist the death of one person doesn't. The headlines were more 'broadsheet' style whereas the death of the boy was more 'tabloid like'. The formality of the accent suggest as more formal audience of which suggests there audience is more academically achieved - middle class south of England. The producers ideology is that politics is more important.

The actual story did not mention the hammer as they did not want the brutality to affect the audience. They discussed the charge to the man rather than what actually happened to the child. They do not mention his ethnicity and his wife is not mentioned as she is not relevant, additionally his nature is also not mentioned.

The mirror's coverage of the story is quite insensitive, the lexis of 'screaming' suggests they want to portray this as a slasher like event.

BBC News Facebook Page Comments

In the comments his religion is discussed but they do not come to a conclusion s it is not mentioned in the media whatsoever. The preferred reading is that he should be executed for taking this boy's life. The least liked comment is the sane voice that suggests we should donate to the NSPCC, this is because people are more happy to rant on FaceBook than actually do anything. Open comments allow audiences to share ideologies that the newspapers cannot share.
