Music Videos:

A video that accompanies a song.
The visual aspects of the song.
Often includes performance - the protagonist is often the artist or part of a band.
It provides the audience wth another level of entertainment.
A music video is advertising for a song.
A music video needs to loo like how a song sounds.

Social and cultural context:
Whats going on in the world at the time of production.
Polysemy - Many meanings.

Conventions:
Setting
Performance
Dramatic, staged lighting
Short duration (3-4 mins)

Construction - The producer builds representations
Intertextuality - When you reference another product in your product, it also saves time.

Music is very important because we identify with the product more than others.
We often use music as an escape whilst we are alone (e.g. travelling)
We can make friends through music (Social Interaction.)

Scopitone - First edition of music video (A vinyl record + a bit of film in a jukebox)

France Gall - Baby Pop

The binary opposition of the happy, jolly music video in contrast with the depressing lyrics of the song.
Gall's performance is very still and she is not looking at the camera. This suggests she is awkward and uninterested in the making of the music video.
The setting of the music video is very boring and bland, the backgrounds are not very exciting at all - they are grey bleak and depressing.
This architecture in the 1960s was cool.
The awkward dancing could relate to the social context at the time, the costumes relate to the times - they would be considered fashionable and chic.

REBECCA - Vanity Angel

Performance and a direct mode of address is used - the draws the audience in as the target audience feel like they are talking to them - the is aimed at Japanese men. They use american style staircases in order to give the video an american feel to the video. It also provides the audience with intertextuality and exotiscim.
