DIEGESIS - In the world of the narrative
Diegesis of sound is complicated.
Text/graphics inter title of which communicates explicit meaning with the audience.
The long shot at the beginning of the video introduces audience to the band slowly coming into focus. This makes an introduction for any newcomers to the band.
The mise-en-scene reflects the era in which it was made, the bedroom is a working class bedroom as it is small and grubby of which demonstrates to the audience that they themselves are very much alike.
The costume refuses to conform to hegemonic codes.
The close up shots of the band members makes them look disinterested as it is subversive of conventions of music videos.

CONVERGENCE - The coming together of two previously separate media industries.

Music videos exist because:
It's completely new
It can generate money through advertising
It creates an entirely new form of entertainment

SYNERGY - The interconnectedness of media products e.g. TV shows.

Benefits include:
Convergence between music and film
Sharing by audiences (gets people talking)

MTV popularised music videos from 1980s. This gave the medium a new way of advertising to audiences.

Differences between Music videos and Film:
Music videos are edited around a song whereas in films music is played over the top.
Music videos are much much shorter than films.
Narrative in music video are simple as they don't have much time to communicate this.
There are no trailers for music videos unlike films.
A film is the product whereas a music video is an advert for the song.
Music videos are over the top whereas films are more subversive.
Music videos will often use confusing narrative techniques also their speed of editing is much faster.
Music videos are more direct address - if films use this it is often for comedic purpose.
Films appeal to older audiences than music videos.
You have to pay to watch films however music videos are free.

CELEBRITY - You need to be well known, a personality, a role model, to have done something to be known.

Applause - Lady Gaga

The mise-en-scene of her eyes being covered shows she is trying to mask her identity. He lack of clothing shows how confident she is and her celebrity status. She is breaking hegemonic rules of society. The mise-en-scene of the cauldron presents her like a witch and that she isn't a very nice person. The key light focuses on lady gag and makes her the subject of the long shot - this connotes her importance. The bouquet of flowers is symbolic of her fans love for her.
