Ideology - Thoughts, beliefs and opinions
They are constructed by media language (shot types mise-en-scene)
They are constructed by producers.
The producer is attempting to manipulate the audience (brainwash)

Riptide is deliberately confusing and a challenging video. In comparison Formation is focused around racism, slavery and hurricane Katrina. It is very specific whereas Riptide is odd and doesn't have a specific focus.

Barthes - Semiotic Codes
Levi-Strauss - Binary Oppositions
Gauntlet - Audiences (Identity)
Hall - Reception/Representations (+Stereotypes)
Van Zoonen - Male Gaze
Hooks - Feminist Theory
Gilroy - Postcolonialism

In the Riptide music video the woman singing is represented as well as the mise-en-scene of the make up that is normally worn to cover self confidence issues and by this make up running down her face presents the ideology that behind the asks women are weak and vulnerable.

In the Formation music video Beyonce is representing black women in the south of America. The shot of her on top of the car presents a binary opposition of black women being powerful, yet vulnerable. Her fist in the air is the symbol of the black power movement and the symbolic code of her stood like the statue of liberty and presents a dream of black women being equal in America.
