Assassins Creed III - Liberation

How does this trailer target a specialised and a generalised audience?

The black female protagonists subverts the expectation that the target audience are white young males. She is the main avatar. The new HD version releases new missions of which is advertising towards pre-existing fans that have already played the original version of the game (Double Dipping). It is common industry practise to re-release games on other consoles in order to make the game more popular.

The game tackles big ideological issues about race slavery and colonialism of that time period. It is not common for issues of post-colonialism to be dealt with in a Triple A game - this is because it is a touchy subject for the audience, therefore increasing word of mouth sales. This film trailer is reminiscent of the Quentin Tarintino film Django Unchained that was a cult film in the Antebellum era of America.

This game had very high production values, however the graphics were not as good as other assassins creed games. This game was a spin off of the main series, and was perhaps not sold in the main series because it did not feature a white male as the protagonist. It was developed by Ubisoft Montreal who have experience in creating successful Assassins Creed games. This was a multi-platform release, being released on the PS Vita, PS3 and the Xbox 360.

The trailer shares the conventions of a high budget Hollywood film, the extra-diegetic voiceover/narration, lots of action and fighting scenes (proairetic codes), the soundtrack has high quality orchestral music of which connotes high production values and high quality. The Assassins Creed game series have created a brand image, the covers all feature similar mise-en-scene and costume.

In May 2019, the game will be re-released as a part of Assassin's Creed III Remastered for PlayStation 4Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows.

The game has been re-released many times as the initial sales did not meet the company's expectation. The game was not very well received, the plot was repetitive and boring. The reviews were average and did not help sales figures. It is being re-released for a second time as it is easier to re-release a game on a new console than make a whole new game for one. It only sold 600,000 copies on the PS Vita, of which is terrible for a triple A big budget game - it did not meet expectations.

Video games used to be regulated by ELSPA, however in modern day they are regulated by PEGI.

PEGI stands for Pan European Game Information, and is an advisory board of game ratings. The ratings do not refer to the level of difficulty of the game - PEGI is about informing the audience what is in the game. The regulation of games in the UK is not at all effective. Video games are mainly bought by parents.
