Representation

Image
Representation It allows people to relate to characters. It allows us to learn about the world. Gives insight into other cultures Representations are not real - they are a construction of reality. Every media product has bias. Les Revenants: Simon  Delaitre: Young White Male Attractive to a teenage female audience? Late teens/early 20s Dark features make him look rebellious. Looks stereotypically french - aimed at a french audience. Camille  Séguret: (15) Young White Female Clothes aren't stereotypical for a teenage girl in a western world in a modern day era. She's been cast because she looks young. Attracts the target audience of teenagers who may aspire to be like her. Quite smartly dressed for a teenager - atypical representation. Old beyond her years. Complex representation - reflected in the complicated narrative.  Claire Séguret: Appeals to middle aged men Blonde hair Very minimal makeup = Hardworking??

Regulation of the TV Industry

Image
Why do regulations exist for television? So children don't see things that they shouldn't. E.g. Violence and Pornography This is traumatising for growing minds. This is why shows that contain matters like this are shown after the 9pm watershed. There are sometime secondary and third watersheds for really controversial stuff. Mass media can be used to control groups of people - this is the hypodermic needle model. - But are we really that stupid? (Passive audience theory) OFCOM Regulate Television in the UK. Harm and Offence - Limiting what is accessible to children -Emotional harm/Mental issues -Hurts their feelings -Criticises their faith and religion -Provoke violent crime -Manipulate an ideology - Provoke racial hatred Sonia Livingston and Peter Hunt  Its harder to regulate media in general due to the internet and digital technologies. Self regulations - Parents regulating what their children watch  The gun is intended to kill Anita. The air rifle wou

Breakfast Scene - Humans

Image
Breakfast Scene Middle class breakfast. C/U of Anita's face when she is laughing. Establishing shot of the nuclear family."Normal family with two adults, three kids'" Create as aspirational audience for the 30 something male middle class audience. Slow pan to the mise-en-scene of the breakfast table, an easily identifiable scene for the middle class audience. The C/U of Laura's face establishes her dislike of Anita, a relatable situation for the target audience who may debate over whether to get a maid or a cleaner. The snide remark from Joe ''This is what breakfast is supposed to be like" - a low key dig at Laura, that is she is failing to provide and play the role of mother. Provides a hyperreal fantasy aspiration for the middle class audience.  The mise-en-scene of the dressing gowns conventional of the sitcom genre, yet unconventional of the sci-fi genre. The debate of whether Anita is a slave or not. A fan is an Active audi

Persona Synthetics

Image
What is the historical context of the genre? How has it shifted over time? There is no political meaning behind the characters. It is a more dystopian than sci-fi.  It is atypical sci-fi drama hybrid. It resembles outnumbered. Representations of different social groups. Persona Synthetics   The Persona Synthetics narrative allows audiences to experiences  the narrative  beyond  the show. The packaging slip is a proairetic code for the show. The immerison of the twitter feed involves the audience outside of the show. It is funded by Channel 4 and AMC (American Movie Channel). Channel 4 -  publicly-owned and commercially-funded -      -  owned and operated by  Channel Four Television Corporati on , a public corporation of the  Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport - Statement of Promises - Channel4, More4, E4, Film4. - Makes use of the Watershed, placing shows later at night. The Television Industry

The Television Industry Television is a specialised industry. In the Uk a drama series is generally around 6-8 episodes per season. A UK comedy series is approx 6 episodes per series, this means there are more specialists working to make the product, usually less than 1-2 people on the script writing teams. In the USA a comedy series is 20-24 episodes per series, making it less specialised, having 8-10+ script writers. Humans has 8 episodes per season as it was produced in the UK (It is a drama/Sci-Fi series). It was first produced in Sweden under a different name and the show was much more graphic - it was censored for the UK audience. Television is completely commercial and global and has had to adapt it's structure, role and function for the digital market. The BBC is a non-commercial function - it is to inform rather than entertain the audience. It does not have adverts and is paid for by the people.  BBC, Channel 4 and ITV all have to share the licensing f

HyperReality

HyperReality - Beyond reality. "It is no longer a question of limitation, nor duplication, nor even parody. It is a question of substituting the signs of the real for the real" - Jean Baudrillard Semiotics - The way that the producer encodes meaning into a media product. Simulacra - A representation of something that never existed to begin with. Humans and Simulacra: - Synths - The parallel world to ours Postmodernism: - Break rules deliberately - Critiscing religion - Breaking the fourth rule - Intertextuality - Bricolage Postmodernism is a theory that is anti-theory.

Humans Mini Mini Mock

Humans Mini Mini Mock In Humans, the most prevalent Binary Opposition is the differences between Humans and Cyborgs called 'Synths". In the scence where Anita is first introduced to Laura, their differences are made evident my the mise-en-scene of their clothing: Anita, the synth wears very basic, bland and non-provocative clothing that suggest she is  nothing but a machine made to do the chores. Laura wears colourful, stereotypical modest clothing for a middle aged mum of which suggest she a personality of which cyborgs do not. This further infers that Anita is a slave to the Hawkins family as they have not bothered to dress her in anything other that her generic synth clothing, whereas Laura is a valued member of the family that deserves better treatment and respect than Anita even though physically they appear to be the same gender. Furthermore, the binary opposition between Synths and Humans is reinforced in the scene where Leo confronts Sadiq. Leo holds up a worn

Humans continued.

Humans continued An ensemble cast - When many different characters play roles and it is difficult to point out the protagonist, as there are over 20 character archetypes. There are many story arcs in humans: - The Hawkins Family - Leo trying to find Anita - George and Odi - Flashback to Leo and Anita Travelling - Nishca in the brothel - Fred in the Plantation - The Synths in the warehouse being produced - Detective Drummond finding his wife wife a Synth - Anita kidnapping Sophie Much like Butler Van Zoonen suggests gender is constructed by a producer in a media product ad it reflects the values and ideologies of the time period it was produced in. Leo's Confrontation: Resembles a crime drama, shown through a close up of two heads in the same shot makes it look like Leo is threatening Sadiq. The mise en scene of Leo's unshaven face demonstrates that he doesn't care about his appearance - he is an outlaw. His vocal delivery is quite stern and blunt, someti

Bonus Theories

Bonus Theories John Burger- Ways of Seeing "Men act, women appear." Men get all the attention but the women are there to be looked at. Within a narrative it will be male characters that drive the narrative forward. For example Indiana Jones.

'Humans' - A highly Polysemic show (KEY THEORY 10&11)

'Humans' -  A highly Polysemic show This means that it is a different show for different people - so it can attract a larger audience. However, it can also be very complex and hard to understand because it is polysemic. Anita can be compared to a washing machine as she is a female synth as women stereotypically supposed to do the housework in the home. This is reinforced by the hawkins family calling her 'it' and 'that' of which suggests she is basically just their slave. it reinforces the male view of what women serve as a purpose in society, they just have to do what they are told. Cyborg - A half robot, half human (Cybernetic organism). Glasses are a form of improving our quality of life, they help you able to see and theoretically make you a cyborg.  Globalisation  has improved our  lives through  the use of technologies, this also makes us cyborgs, for example all our clothes are made through the use of globalisation. What is Humanity?

The Representation of Women and Cyborgs

The Representation of Women and Cyborgs Autonomy -If you have control over your own life. Automintom - A slave/robot who has no control over their life. What is 'representation'? -Representation is re-presentation by a producer for the purpose of showing their ideology, messages and values. This is for manipulating the audience as this emits an ideology to the audience. This manipulating will change the opinion of the audience - Hypodermic Needle Theory/ Cultivation Theory. This also impacts the minority that have been represented - this reinforces a stereotype. What roles do women/Synths adopts in 'Humans'? -Mother -Domestic Housewife -Maid -Slave -Pretty -Sex Worker -Child -Companion/Friend -Son -Professional -Caregiver -Maid -Butler -Rebel Humans Closing Montage - Textual Analysis - Both Anita and Laura show motherly affection towards the small child - this is frowned upon as Anita is not the Childs mother nor a biolog

Sci Fi genre and sociohistorical context

Sci Fi genre and sociohistorical context Allegory -  a media product that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one. - e.g. Animal Farm by George Orwell. Zeitgeist -  the defining spirit or mood of a particular period of history as shown by the ideas and beliefs of the time. (The 'spirit of the time') Godzilla (Japan 1950) Japan is the only country to have experienced nuclear bombing, Hiroshima and Nagasaki a retaliation from Pearl Harbour. it was after this that japan surrendered. Godzilla is a representation of America (The baddie), of who took over Japan after the war. America tried to turn them more left wing than right wing. The dinosaur was made as the trauma was too raw to feature the disaster explicitly. It shows women having main roles in a film for one of the first times in Japan. Invasion of The Saucer Men (USA 1957) The Villan is Russia during the first cold war, the aliens in the film are Russian spies inva
